CHAMOTTE For fine fireclay and design-driven sanitaryware
Imerys produces high, consistent quality chamotte for the production of fine fireclay for the sanitaryware industry.
Imerys chamotte is well known for its high quality and consistency which fosters reduced cracking, shrinkage and deformation in large complex sanitaryware pieces. Chamotte is a superior alternative to vitreous china for the manufacture of more sophisticated, innovative design-driven sanitaryware pieces.
Chamotte is a calcined clay. The calcination process takes place in a rotary kiln at high temperatures of 1400 – 1600°C. Sanitaryware pieces are fired at lower temperatures of around 1200°C. As the chamotte is inert at the firing stage, it acts like a skeleton enabling the production of sanitaryware such as large shower trays and bathtubs with enhanced mechanical properties.
It is the introduction of chamotte that characterizes the production of fine fireclay, which enables the production of bigger and more complex sanitaryware pieces.
Imerys chamotte offers the following properties:
- controlled particle size distribution
- minimal cristobalite to avoid dusting, cracking and health and safety issues
- low magnetic content.
