- Enhanced smoothness & gloss
- Improved coverage
- Optimized costs
- Improved fiber yield
Imerys E-Type Series is a platform of premium platy clays from Middle Georgia with large plate diameter and thin crystal dimension that can deliver unique value to a variety of paper and board grades.
In LWC grades, the improved coating coverage delivers better smoothness and gloss and allows papermakers to cover rougher base stock with less calendering. In the pre-coat, papermakers can utilize large E-Type kaolin plates combined with blocky pigments to create a structured coating that improves optical and physical coverage.
The interaction between E-Type™ hyper-platy kaolins and blocky carbonates can lead to a disrupted bulky coating structure through reduction in packing fraction. This improves the coverage of the base sheet and also gives a smoother printing surface through preferential surface alignment after calendering.
The E-Type kaolin product line from Imerys can help optimize costs in several ways. By producing a rougher, bulkier base paper, paper and board producers can increase machine speeds and improve fiber yield.
Using E-Type kaolins in coating formulas can reduce expensive opacifiers, reduce binder, reduce the top coat weight or potentially increase carbonate share in the formulation.
