Celite

CELITE® For outstanding anti-block performance in plastic films

  • Outstanding film anti-block performance
  • Increased film clarity
  • Reduced haze
  • Mechanical properties

Imerys Celite® grades are typically used in premium films where excellent clarity and low haze is required. Imerys Celite provides a unique balance between blocking, re-blocking, haze, clarity and mechanical properties of plastic films made from LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PET and PP.

Celite is diatomaceous earth (DE). Diatomaceous earth (DE) consists of the fossilized remains of diatoms, single-celled algae. It is a naturally occurring amorphous silica which is mined like a mineral.

Celite diatomaceous earth antiblock additives exhibit minimal interactions with other additives in most LDPE and LLDPE resin systems. This assures that the optimal amount of processing aids and other organic additives are used.

The theory of antiblocking is that varied particle shapes of diatomite create aspirites on film surface, and the roughness created reduces wander or wants forces responsile for film blocking. The irregular shaped particles of Celite diatomite silica are extremely efficient for this application in all types of polyolefin films including LLDPE, metallocene PE and polypropylene. Depending on the type of resin used to make the film and the end use application, the loading of Celite antiblock required usually ranges from 0.15% to 0.5% by weight of the resin.

Due to their refractive index closely matching that of polyethene and their low loading requirements, Celite antiblock additives are the industry standard for low haze  and high clarity polyethylene films. To meet optimum antiblocking and optical performance, Celite products go through stringent quality control standards. This allows the end user to be assured of a consistent quality antiblock additive, batch after batch.

In addition to traditional applications in PE film, Celite additives are used in a wide variety of plastic, plastomer and compounded polymer systems:

  • Antiblocking, prevention of plate out and gloss control in PVC sheets
  • Silica nucleation site for polyurethane
  • Reinforcement and dimensional stability in siloxane (RTV) and extension of the pyrogenic silica
  • Mold release and gloss/sheen control of various other resin systems
