Polyolefins are the most widely used commodity thermoplastics. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) represent more than 40% of total global plastic consumption. PP and PE can easily be separated from other plastic fractions due to their low density. However, PE and PP are immiscible, and tend to separate into two phases when processed together. When recycled, they demonstrate a significant reduction in, and consistency of, mechanical properties. This lack of miscibility and the loss of performance limit their application, even when the recycled source is post-industrial rather than post-consumer. The result is a European recycling rate of about 25% and limited applications for this abundant resource. With an amended European directive 94/62/EC requiring states to recycle a minimum of 55% of plastic packaging by the end of 2025, the industry needs new technologies to provide consistent and high performance recycled polyolefins.
